Mostly there, but obviously not reviewed by Steve Vai

I'm nowhere near the level of Steve Vai on guitar, but I like to get his tab books to see what he's doing and try to learn some of it. That said, after reviewing this book against the recordings, it's pretty close. However, one song that really sticks out to me as not correct (at least how it is written) is Gravity Storm. There are a ton of notations for using the bar when I know for a fact Steve plays this almost all with bends. I was standing a foot away from him in a sound check, and took a video of him, playing Gravity Storm and he used the bar once during the entire song. He even talks about this song in interviews and how it was like a workout for his hand because of all of the bending. My point is, it may sound close, but it's not what he's actually playing. That leads me to question the accuracy of rest of the book.

I Pre-ordered the book, and I received it perfectly on time.

A few notes about the book, it appears that the transcription was done by a very talented transcriber, but he/she did not have any background experience with Vai's work. It very well takes into account the proper fingering positions to achieve the desired tones, and I have yet to find a true error (in terms of the note being wrong, not taking into account the techniques used) in the music, but there are abundant errors within the tabs itself, stemming from the aforementioned techniques. Vai has made a strong point of the use of his pre-bending to make a Dive sound during Gravity Storm, emphasizing that the recording guitar was incapable of instantly-applied modulation of tuning via the Whammy bar (it didn't have a tremolo system installed). He did make heavy use of the Whammy pedal later in that same song though, so I guess I can see why the Transcriber would have been confused. (but only if he/she has never heard of Steve Vai.)

Like I said, I haven't yet found an error in the notes represented, and it doesn't look rushed. Overall, its a great piece of work that deserves your attention!

the maps need help

I just returned from two months in Pakistan, and I primarily used the Lonely Planet. Using the Lonely Planet for travel can tend to give one the feeling that all countries look and taste the same, and are inhabited by mostly backpackers and english-speaking hotelkeepers. The hotels recommended manage to sustain a surprisingly similar clientele throughout the Middle East and South Asia at least, and it starts to wear thin after a bit. The maps of many cities were not up to LP standards, Peshawar's Old City being a notable example. The Rawalpindi section could use an update, and I must say that the food recommendations generally seem to be stabs in the dark, in which case one is better off stabbing in the dark according to his own tastes. Accomodation selection criteria must be devoid of any Architectural or historical interest factors, but is quite successfully utilitarian. Many wonderfully intriguing and inexpensive old hotels are skipped. The ubiquity of this guide tends to ghetto the Western backpackers in little enclaves, useful both if you wish to avoid them like the plague, or you relish their company. The historical notes are surprisingly knowledgeable in most areas, though some notes concerning the British Raj period are either tritely anti-colonial or of dubious veracity, sometimes both. The Paksitani bureaucracy is a much more flexible entity than the authors would suggest, and things like Foreigner's Registration and exit taxes are not necessarily carved in stone. In conclusion, this guide definitely caters to the trek-minded eco-groover, with disproportionate emphasis laid on the Northern Areas, and on repeating tired environmentalist mantras.

An Essential Pakistan Guide!

After using this Lonely Planet Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway 7th edition during my recent 6 week trip to Pakistan I must say that this book is an essential guide for sure. I traveled all along the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar (China) down to Islamabad. From Islamabad I continued to explore the rest of this fascinating country to the southern city of Karachi. If you are planning a visit to Pakistan you simply must have this book. My only criticism is that the map inset of the Karakoram Highway contains serious errors such as placing Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan along the Karakoram Highway region. Lonely Planet should correct these errors as soon as possible so travelers don't think they can cross into Pakistan from those two countries through which I also traveled in 2008.

A bitingly funny satire

"Accidental Death of an Anarchist," by Dario Fo, is adapted by Gavin Richards from a translation by Gillian Hanna. The Methuen Modern Plays edition contains an introduction by Stuart Hood; Fo himself contributes an author's note and a postscript. The opening pages note that the original Italian edition had a copyright date of 1970. The author's note describes how the play was inspired by the death of an anarchist being held in police custody.
This outrageous comedy opens with a character known as the "Maniac" being brought to a police station. It's a very "metatheatrical" piece; Fo warps theatrical conventions and makes jokes in a way that reminds me a bit of Luigi Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author." There are some really funny scenes, but a very serious vein still runs throughout the piece.
Ultimately, this is a thought-provoking piece about truth. What is the true story, and how do you discover it? Fo's satiric wit explores police brutality as well as the relationships among the police, the media, and the political establishment. I recommend this piece by the Nobel Prize winning Fo to all with an interest in 20th century drama and/or political activism.

A Play Not Performed ENOUGH

I truly enjoyed this play and again am wondering why it is not put on more often. Granted, it has a specific political objective, due to its timely plot and circumstancial event. Yet, as a performer, I find the quality of writing to be extremely wonderful. Interestingly, I also discovered that Fo's viewpoint on comedic and political theatre to be very similar to my own:

(It) grabs at the heart and guts, but attempts to get there by a violent moment of laughter. Because laughter does not remain at the bottom of the mind, leaving sediment which cannot be wiped off. Because laughter helps avoid one of the worst dangers, which is catharsis. (5)

Fo wanted the reverse of catharsis, the emotional release, and it is very apparent in Accidental Death of an Anarchist. He seeks to provoke, debate, to arouse feelings and to challenge ideas while inviting his audience to consider new points of view. I respect this form of theatre, for it is the hardest to write, collaborate, and present clearly to an already cynical audience in this day and age. By using an absurdist/satirical/farcial approach towards the issues of power, its abuse, and political stations, he creates sense out of nonsensical characters and situations. The maniac, a harliquien like character, leads the members of a police station somewhere in a city, in this case we assume New York or London, through a dizzying investigation around the questionable death of an anarchist from years before. Mysteriously, the anarchist had "thrown" himself from a four story window during the course of police investigation. We, the audience suspect foul play for the cause, and in effect we see the maniac give nothing but insane play to the accused. He is quick witted and incredibly dynamic with language and vast information. The maniac flaunts with their pride and guilt, causing mass confusion. The audience cannot help but love his crazy ways. In true satiric fasion, just and darkly comedic rewards are served to all characters by the end. The audience is left wondering how these events effect them. The ever present window in the scene is the only realistic element that the audience must contend with. It reminds them of the reality of the crime, how it really took place, and yet they are forced to laugh at it and find disgust in that humor. It is this form of satire that provokes thoughts and action towards change, which is what Fo wanted. It is this subtle stealthiness of dark humor that creates the desired effect of political theatre: change, perhaps for the better, or in this case, for the playwrights cause.

Way Too Much Zen

I saw a small production of this play a few years ago in downtown Minneapolis and was most interested in what it had to say about police interrogation techniques. This is not a topic which I would expect to be popular now, as most emphasis has been shifted to deadly confrontations, and the only major death in this play is of a suspect who was hanging out of a police department window before he dropped to his death. In the history of people being pick up for interrogation, this might be as famous someplace in Italy as the Biko case in South Africa, where police in Port Elizabeth picked Biko up and slammed him against the wall because he was not cooperating fully in their investigation of his attitude toward law and order.
I thought that the theme of the play was that the police get overly zealous in trying to pin a crime on a particular person once the police have made up their collective minds who they think should have committed the crime, as the defense allegations in the famous O.J. murder case seemed well founded when the methods of the L.A.P.D. were subject to the scrutiny of attorneys who are aware of how these things are usually done. In the case of the actual event upon which the Accidental Death of the Anarchist was based, the police techniques were subject to an official investigation, and the play was written as on ongoing farce which kept Italy informed as more facts came to light. The play may be way beyond the Zen of any audience, but if people think that something about the nature of the police is revealed in it, I don't think that those people should be considered as paranoid as they ought to be. Anyone who loses sleep over this kind of thing hasn't adjusted well to modern society, so they can probably find a shrink to give them pills that will put them to sleep, but that is a different topic, but not much different, really.

On 24 April 1877 Tsar Nicholas II declared war on the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan had a battle-hardened army ready for war. For the Tsar, this was to be the first major conflict since the abolition of serfdom and the creation of a German-style military reserve system. About the Author
Ian Drury, an experienced editor and military writer, has published a number of books and articles on aspects of military history as varied as the Russo-Turkish War, Confederate Infantry, German WWI Stormtroopers and the Second World War on the Russian Front, and that's just for Osprey! He has made a particular study of the battle of Verdun over a number of years, one result of which has been his now legendary Verdun wargame Hommes Soupes.

shoddy but tolerable

The very first line of the book "On 24 April 1877 Tsar Nicholas II declared war on the Ottoman Empire" shows how shoddy and rushed this book was. Alexander II was the Tsar at that time. Nicholas wasn't crowned until 1894. The book is filled with maddening errors like that as well as ommisions and weaknesses like plate commentaries that don't describe the uniforms in the referenced plate at all.
But still a somewhat worthwhile attempt since there are so few books on the subject.

Interesting

This is one of the less known conflicts of the XIX century. Both sides used modern weapons and techniques learned from the American Civil War, but both still showed poor capacity to adapt themselves for the new kind of war, having a high cost of lifes for a relatively short conflict. Some historical mistakes found, take care.

If you are interested in the Balcans wars and the historical struggle between Russia and Turkey for the control of Black Sea and the access to the Mediterrean, you should get it.

Very good details and explanation of the war. Great colored uniforms and descriptions. Only complaint was there were very few maps inside of the book!
