"Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs" ~ A Review

I have been thinking about how to approach this review for a while. I think the best way to do this is in two parts.

The first part is "the message" that I took away. The second part is " the actual writing" of the book. My perspective is that of an owner, not a trainer. Although, I feel this book speaks to both, equally.

"The message" that came across loud and clear to me is one of HOPE. Hope that my dog, along with thousands of others, can be worked with, helped, treated, and ultimately, overcome this horrific disorder. I don't use the word "horrific" lightly. As an owner, it is upsetting when something in your home is damaged, and sometimes very costly to repair or replace. However, for the dog, it truly is horrific; the panic the dog endures during the time the owners are out of the house is overwhelming and debilitating. Neither the dog or the owners can live without treating this disorder. This book shares the message of hope, gives owners and trainers the tools they need to combat, and ultimately conquer, Separation Anxiety.

This book is extremely well written, easily understood (even though I'm not a trainer), provides great examples on how to write up the treatment plans, and explains, in detail, the five phases of the treatment protocol.

I especially enjoyed reading the case studies. I admit, I read them first! Along with that, the photos help the text come alive. I'm a "photo junkie" and really think the photos add to the reader's understanding.

In my opinion, whether you are a dog trainer or an owner of a dog with Separation Anxiety, this book is a "must read ." If you are an owner and currently working with a trainer, reading this book would make a great addition to your program. If you are an owner and don't know where to turn, this book will give you the information you need to either start a treatment program on your own, or give you resources where you can turn for help. If you are a dog trainer, by taking on Separation Anxiety cases, you can make a HUGE difference in the lives of these dogs and their owners.

GREAT, WONDERFUL, SUPERB, EXCELLENT, SPLENDID, MAGNIFICENT, IMPRESSIVE, AND GENERALLY A HECK OF A GOOD BOOK!

I have to agree with my son's verdict that this is a gripping page turner. The scary bits are tense and well spaced throug the novel' TES

About the Author

Michael Ford read English and Classics at Oxford University, before a stint teaching English in Greece. He worked in children's nonfiction publishing for several years before becoming an editor of adult fiction in West London. Spartan is his first children's novel.

AMAZING!!!!!!! This book touched my heart. It is just amazing. Don't get the sample. Buy the book. It is worth it. I had to something for summer reading. I chose hatchet, which by the way is amazing too, and Fire of Ares. I loved it so much. I would recommend this book for people who are at least 11. There is some words that are kind of hard to understand. And there is violence. I'm not giving any details, because I want it to be a surprise!!! Bye! :)

quick read but too forgiving

Heroine and hero were both likeable and I rooted for them to reconcile but I feel like the end came very quickly and she forgave his indiscretions too easily, including his accusations that she was unfaithful, too. Still, it was worth reading-I have always enjoyed Sally MacKenzie's writing!

I seriously wish I had my money back. I was so disappointed in this book. I loved all the other books in the Naked series and anxiously awaited this one. I am questioning that Sally MacKenzie wrote it. The whole book is unbelievable and sappy. The couple don't talk to each other for ten years but then within three days are back together forever - no conversations just everything fine and dandy. The characters were boring and I felt no connection with any of them - even the characters that had been in her other books that I loved were boring in this one.

This is a short novella about an estranged couple of 10 years Lord and Lady Kelgorn.They both have been invited to a house party not knowing the other is coming. They end up in the same room and are told not more rooms are available.It appears that there are matchmakers a foot. You learn why she left him and will they be able to find love again.She has been with no one he has had one mistress after the other. I enjoyed reading it not as long of course as her Naked books.

About the Author
Dale Shipley, Ed.D., was Director of the School of Early Childhood Education at Ryerson University, Toronto, from 2001 to 2006. Her career in early childhood education was interrupted on three occasions when she worked as a consultant or administrator for organizations affiliated with change in the Ontario postsecondary sector. These experiences broadened her understanding of the influence of the early years on later learning success and deepened her commitment to high quality early childhood education as essential preparation for life. A book every aspiring musician should read!

The title sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it? Normally, it would be easy to discount a book with a title like this, but knowing that Douglas Niedt was the author I was excited to read it and confident that it would offer substantive information that musicians could use in their careers.

The first thing to understand is what this book is not. Niedt does not promise to make you a better guitarist, a famous musician, or a even millionaire (one who has a net worth of one million dollars or more) in his book. What he will do is make you think long and hard about whether you wish make the commitment to become an entrepreneurial musician, and offer lots of good advice on how to begin and grow your business so that you can make a million dollars or more over the course of your career.

Niedt covers a lot of ground, but most of the book can be divided two distinct concepts: entrepreneurial thinking and understanding common business practices. These two concepts are seamlessly woven together throughout with the earlier chapters generally discussing entrepreneurial thinking and later chapters relating more specific information about business practices that apply to musicians.

Throughout the book, the author reflects on his own life as a student, performer, teacher, and businessperson. He also incorporates many anecdotes that illustrate typical challenges that have been overcome successfully by famous musicians and businesspeople throughout history.

"Do you really want to do this? Do you have what it takes?" asks an early chapter. A short survey will help young people who may have big dreams but no realistic idea of what it means to be a musician to put things into perspective. After each survey question, there are reality checks that will encourage the reader to reflect on their attitudes and expectations about a career in music and whether or not they possess the drive and self-discipline to succeed. I find that Niedt strikes just the right balance here. He is careful not to discourage the reader but is very realistic about the sacrifices that must be made in order to make a living playing music.

The first two sections of the book include several essays on topics such as: keeping a positive attitude, setting goals, evaluating oneself, choosing an educational path, how to get along with other people, and more. These chapters are definitely motivational, but also make good business sense for anyone who wants to be self-employed and stay optimistic in the face of adversity. This section also includes two of my favorite chapters: "Talent is Not the Answer" and "You're a Failure - Congratulations!"

As the book proceeds, more in-depth information about what it takes to be a self-employed musician is explored. Advice is given on virtually all aspects of setting up a business as a sole proprietorship or LLC, recording your own CDs, building a website that will help you sell your music, knowing what to charge for shipping, maintaining a database, understanding tax laws and much more. The chapter on maintaining a database was particularly a good one for me as I am always trying to find a better way to organize my records of students and business contacts electronically.

Most of the business information passed on in the book I already know. I've learned it along the way from colleagues, teachers, tax and financial advisers, and friends. Some things I found out through my own research. Almost all of it was learned after college as I struggled to establish myself as a teacher and musician. I can only imagine how much easier my path may have been with a book like this one to guide me.

Douglas Niedt has written a book that every young person aspiring to a career in music should read. I will definitely be recommending it to many of my students and their parents. It paints a very clear and realistic picture of what the career of a professional musician looks like. If you are starting a career in music or know someone who is, this is required reading.

Finally, if you are not a guitarist, you'll still want to buy the book. Doug may be targeting guitarists with his title, but the book is not about playing the guitar, it's about being an entrepreneurial musician. All of the information inside is equally applicable to pianists, saxophonists, trombonists, etc. I'm guessing it will take a trombonist a little longer to reach the million-dollar mark, but that's another story.

Good Advice and a Great Read.

The best book on the market about making it in the music or entertainment business is Doug Niedt's "How to Make a Million Dollars Playing the Guitar."

Why do I say that? First of all Mr Niedt is one of the world's greatest guitar players, he has been there and done that; just check out his concert, recording or teaching background. Second, Mr. Niedt is from Missouri (the 'show me' state). Like Harry Truman, Doug tells it like it is.

Doug gives you 9 questions to answer, for example, "I can't imagine myself doing anything else." Doug then runs you through how to set up goals, have the right attitude, keeping your finances in check and many more lessons. By the time you are finished with the book, you will have a guideline for success.

One of the striking things I learned when reading the book is that talent does not count that much. Doug explains that there are a lot of famous entertainers who do not have much talent, but they do have an audience which is very important!

Doug's book also has chapters on selling your own CDs, good business procedures, creating a web site etc. Bravo Doug, I recommend this book without equal or qualification.

Straight forward facts

I enjoyed the book! It has the straight forward approach that keeps a reader turning pages and asking inner questions that need to be asked.
The principles presented strongly apply to any realm of personal success; which many of us need reminding.
Doug has lived every principle presented and is walking/talking proof of the ideas explored.
