Just as important as your tools

Having the right tools for working on guitars is essential, but without the knowledge of knowing exactly how to work on a guitar, your tools are simply paper weight. Billy's guide is something every guitar should keep in their tool box, or on their iPad, like myself. You'll never be left in the dark if you have something to reference. There is a lot of information to take in from a skillful musician and scientist like Billy Penn, who has years of experience to back him up. His work comes through in every guitar he touches or amp he creates. If you haven't heard a Penn Amp in person, you're mistreating your ears. Get this guide and treat your guitar the right way.

Great way to learn how to maintain your own guitars and save LOTS of money, too!

I have been playing the guitar and bass for many years but knew little about
how to repair them - UNTIL NOW.

Thanks to Billy Penn's Guitar Set Up Guide I can now do neck adjustments,
set the intonation and maintain my guitars and basses.

Billy is well known in the NY/NJ metro area for his guitar playing, instrument repair and amplifier building skills.

I have visited his 300guitars Shop in Long Branch, NJ several times. He always does a great job.

His book is clearly written, concise, easy to follow and best of all - it
will save me a LOT of money.

An excellent guide to guitar setup for the do-it-yourselfer

This is an excellent, quick read on setting up your own guitar(s). Why pay someone and wait when you can easily set it up yourself? It takes you through the finer points and when combined with Billy's video on YouTube; it's all you really need to setup your own instruments in a very efficient, professional manner. Highly recommended and well worth the price. As mentioned...be sure to go to YouTube and see Billy's videos for a visual overview of what you're doing as well.

"Soldier" the exciting and gripping third book in the "Talon" series continues as Talon and St. George hunt for the rogues Ember Hill, Riley (aka ex-Basilisk Cobalt) and the soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian. The story picks up when Garret journeys to England the home of the Order of St. George and its Patriarch only to uncover a deadly secret and treacherous coalition that will shake the foundations of both organizations. When he discovers a plan to entrap and kill Ember and Riley, Garret engages the help of a new ally with the hope of returning in time to save the two rogue dragons.

After his dismal failure in capturing his sister Dante is enlisted by Talon to work on a secret project that will not only bolster their dragon army, but could mean the massacre of humanity. Although plagued by conscience Dante will do anything in his power to rise in Talon's hierarchy, and in fulfilling his duty will learn a shocking truth.

Set against a background of war between dragons and dragonslayers, odds against the rogues surviving the escalating clash mount as they learn a dangerous secret behind the growing number of attacks by the soldiers of St. George that could destroy Riley's underground network. Woven into this fascinating page-turner Garret's past and his training as a soldier after the death of his parents are revealed, giving new insight into his dedication to the Order and his beliefs before awakening to the truth of both.

One of the themes of this story centers around the fragility of life as dragonslayer missions escalate even attacking a peaceful temple, with a secret alliance that forces an agonizing decision, as well as the brutality of Talon's cloning scheme to supplement their breeding facilities. This plot is fast-paced and action-packed as Ember, Riley and Garret escape entrapment, raid a library, and are confronted with a deadly duel. Each new twist in the plot fuels the intensity and suspense until culminating in a shocking ending that begs for another novel.

And amid all the violence and turmoil Ember is faced with an agonizing decision about her feelings for Garret and Riley; one possessive and protective, the other conflicted and tormented. Yet as she struggles an Eastern Dragon adds a further complication to her emotional turmoil when she's told of the "Sallith'tahn" , a dragon's instinct to find their life-mate; an inclination thought eliminated by Talon to ensure the dragons devotion to their cause. But in a story that revolves around choices, Ember is determined to make her own decision about who to love which could have tragic repercussions in a world where death is never far away and the price of freedom is costly.

Ember Hill who's sick of all the killing, yearning for peace between dragons and humans continually matures as the series progresses. Stubborn, smart and resourceful she begins to accept the consequences of her life as a rogue. Like all the characters in this series Ember's personality continues to grow as she not only faces Talon's conniving manipulation in the war but is wounded again by St. George's soldiers. Brash and defiant Riley (aka the dragon Cobalt) is steadfast in his determination to protect his safe houses and the hatchlings. Hot-tempered, brash he's also cunning, brave and honourable, never yielding to his temptation to kill his rival. In contrast Garret Sebastian is a steady, unshakable soldier who wants to make amends for the blood he spilled. Frustrated and hurt when he left for England, his love and respect for Ember is constant, never changing. All these characters and many more like the serene, practical and empathetic Eastern dragon Jade; the arrogant and devious Patriarch; and Ember's ambitious but conflicted brother Dante continue to add power and passion to the evolving action and drama.

I give "Soldier" the third book in this highly imaginative and captivating series high praise I'm looking forward to the next story by this talented writer.

Bring on, Legion!

Seriously, the end, not only shook me up but left me panting like a dog in heat for more! I have a love/hate relationship with endings like this. I loved how it went but hate that I have to wait.
I liked the action in this one best of the three books so far. The romance was kind of on the back burner as the dragons and humans fought. Like, really fight in an all out war. But where it leads is what's cool.
Nothing like I expected, and that's a good thing, and yet still predictable in parts that worked.
I love this series, and can't wait to continue. Sad I have to anyway.
You really should read this if you like dragons. You will be thoroughly entertained.

Julie Kagawa never disappoints

Julie Kagawa never disappoints. Book 3 of the Talon saga continues to build on the world, as we're moved beyond the small town feeling in book 1 and even Las Vegas in book 2. It's a whole new ball game with Garret doing his investigation on the Order in England and running into new and exciting characters I won't spoil here, but I will say that we get a chance to see much more diverse dragons than just those within Talon or the rogue group. The character relations continue to be dynamic and interesting on all levels (though I have to say I could do without the love triangle), with Dante and Garret ending up as two characters I look forward to reading most about. Cannot wait for book 4!

About the Author
Susan Fawcett started teaching English at Bronx Community College right after she finished college. The idea for the EVERGREEN books grew out of her frustration that adults needed remediation but the only material available had a tone more appropriate for middle school students. He joined the Communist Party in 1944, at the height of U.S.-Soviet wartime amity, and in the ensuing Cold War paranoia found his life torn apart. Though hailed overseas as a successful writer who stood against McCarthyite hysteria, his name and books became anathema at home. Here he tells the remarkable story of how, when all the major U.S. publishers backed away from his Spartacus , he brought it out himself, with only a small, courageous order from the Doubleday chain--to see it eventually become a multimillion-copy seller and a celebrated movie. Fast does not regret his 13 years of party membership, and in that is refreshingly different from the many who later sourly recanted. Critical of party leadership, dogmatism and its unswerving idealization of the Soviet Union, he nevertheless argues convincingly that most American members were compassionate people who cared deeply for their country while deploring its racism and dog-eat-dog ethics; the idea that they could be, or wanted to be, a threat to national security is ludicrous to him. The book offers an invaluable account of a spirited fighter for the underdog whose prolific writing career was early caught between the paranoid cruelty of his own government and the ideological rigidity of the Communist leadership. AN AMERICAN COMMUNIST CADRE TELLS THE TALE OF THE RED SCARE

I have always been intrigued by the American Communist Party's ability up until the period of the "red scare" of the late 1940's and the 1950's to draw to and recruit a relatively large number of free-lance intellectuals and cultural workers. Whether the party could keep them over the long haul is a separate question. However, if one was to draw up a Who's Who of those members of the American intelligentsia who passed through the party's orbit during the first half of the 20th century one would find numbers far greater than would be indicated by the party's actual influence in American politics. The novelist Howard Fast in his memoir of his decade long membership in the American Communist Party is highly representative of that trend. Or, at least of the trend that could rationally explain their experience without either foaming at the mouth or running to the nearest government law enforcement agency.

The tale Mr. Fast has to tell is informative and, except for the utter poverty of his childhood and the early loss of his mother, not atypical of the urban children of immigrants in general and New York Jewish youth in particular who came of age between World War I and II and joined the party. The key events that drove many into the party's orbit were the Depression, the rise of Nazism in Europe and the hope that Soviet Union could provide a model for a socialist future. Those events also drove many youth into the Social Democratic and Trotskyist movements as well.

What is interesting about Mr. Fast's story is that he joined the party at the tail end of the Communist Part's Popular Front period. That period was exemplified by then Party Chairman Earl Browder's declaration that "Communism is 20th century Americanism" and he and those recruited during the period really believed that this was the road to socialism. Unfortunately for them, Browder and those recruits got caught between the hammer of the American end of Cold War strategy and the Soviet's "left" turn which for a long period effectively ended the harmonious relationships provided during the Popular Front period. Mr. Fast is somewhat exceptional in that rather than leaving during the "red scare" he dug in his heels, stuck it out and did his duty as he saw it. The curious thing about this honorable position is that from what this reviewer was able to read between the lines of his book Mr. Fast was much closer to a Social Democratic or pacifist view than a Communist view during this period. But, such are the vagaries of the human personality.

As Mr. Fast unfolds his story he has many antidotes to relate concerning background to events such as the last part of World War II, the "red scare" as seen down at the local level, the beginning of the Cold War, the start of the Korean War, and the execution of the Rosenburgs. Some of this information I knew previously but much is new and interesting. One should be glad that an old ex-Stalinist decided to write about his experiences. Maybe future generations can learn from those mistakes but should also take a page from the courage of those political opponents, and the American Stalinists were politcal opponents of serious leftists, who stood up to government repression while others, too many, ducked. Beguiling Autobiography of a Self-Important Writer

Howard Fast, hyper-prolific novelist and activist member of the Communist Party for most of the mid-twentieth century, charmed me into believing every word of his must-read autobiography, Being Red. I fairly fell in love with the man. Do read Being Red. Enjoy it, learn a lot, and then read Gerald Sorin's recent, meticulously researched biography of Fast, Life and Literature in the Left Lane. Sorin's account demonstrates that much of Fast's rendering of his own life is at least hyperbolic and at best apocryphal. In tandem they make a fascinating study of a complex, entirely self-created man.

About the Author
Richard J. Colwell is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at the University of Illinois and the New England Conservatory of Music. He is the founding editor of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education and the Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning . He is also a Guggenheim scholar and a member of MENC's Hall of Fame. Michael Hewitt is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music at the University of Maryland. An active guest conductor and clinician, he also serves of the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.

The Teaching of Instrumental Music (3rd Edition)

This 450-page book is a music education textbook which covers the basics of teaching instrumental music for would-be or present teachers. It has become known as an essential "core text" for teachers of instrumental music.

The first three chapters of the book discuss general background: Chapter 1 gives a short history of instrumental music, while Chapters 2 & 3 deal with the objectives and evaluation of music. This material is O.K., but wasn't especially useful for me.

The largest section of the text devotes a whole chapter to each of the instruments commonly played in a student band and orchestra. I found this detailed information to be very helpful. The middle section also includes separate chapters on the "Principles of . . . Winds, Brass, Strings, Percussion, etc.," which introduce the chapters about specific instruments in each of these categories.

The most "down-to-earth," practical chapters are Chapters 4 & 5, which discuss how to motivate students and how to work effectively with administrators, and Chapters 24 & 25 at the end of the book about rehearsal routines and how to rehearse concert literature. I read these chapters first because they seem the most essential for a new instrumental music teacher.

Book for those looking to be instrumental teachers

This book is full of information, from teaching methods to information on each instrument and instrument family commonly used in school music programs. It has just about all you need to know about each instrument to teach beginning students, and is a great resource for aspiring and current instrumental music teachers, especially at the secondary level (Jr. High/High School). If you're looking for books containing actual music, look elsewhere, but if you want information on the instruments and on teaching music, this is one of the best comprehensive resources.

Must buy for all music teachers and musicians!

I bought this book for a class I had in college. And with out a doubt I see myself being able to return to this book for what ever issues I may incounter as I progress to my career. It has problems and solutions for all instruments in band, fingering charts, the historical aspects of each instrument, and so much other things that are valuable to you as a interested learner, teacher, student, and musician.
