Spokan Falls, known as the “Capital of the Inland Empire,” was named after the Spokan Indians and the picturesque falls. In 1891, the name was changed to Spokane. Theodore Roosevelt, Calamity Jane, Billy Sunday, and Charles Lindbergh. Easterners found that its four seasons and profusion of scenic city parks gave them a place to ensure their destiny.

About the Author
Author Don Popejoy is the sheriff of the Westerner’s Spokane Corral and teaches Pacific Northwest history, Lewis and Clark history, American history, and geology for Spokane Community College. He majored in U.S. history and Pacific Northwest history at Whitman College and Eastern Washington University. Author Penny Hutten has written Images of America: Forestville and is the winner of the Editor’s Award for Historic Scholarship from the Sonoma County Historical Society. She is currently program deputy for the Westerner’s Spokane Corral.

Small and assumes you already know the history.

I mistook this book for another more in depth book. This one, is relatively short and assumes that you already know who the people pictured are and why they are significant. I've lived in Spokane for about 10 yrs now and wanted to explore the history of my community. I'd like to say this is a good entry-level picture based history book, but without a greater explanation of who the people and places are, it's just a book of interesting pictures.

A great book on early Spokane . . .

I am originally from the eastern U.S. So I am always interested in how the western U.S. evolved - because the western U.S. is such a different culture. With words and pictures, this book captures the history of Spokane; and does it in a way that brings the era and the region very close to me.

I love this book. I bought several copies and gave to my friends.

I highly recommend it!

Very good pictures. Good Native American coverage. Very little on Ft George Wright. Well worth the price. We are pleased with the book, but not the delayed delivery.

When trying to understand and provide therapy for human beings, we do not so much need a science of molecules or machines, but rather, a science of persons. For a long time men and women have been spoken of, in the social sciences and in psychiatry, as if they were merely instinctual animals or mindless automatons, subject to all kinds of deterministic “mechanisms.” This manuscript concentrates on those aspects of Frankl’s thought that counteract this reductionistic tendency – by restoring to men and women an awareness of their innate potential for freedom, responsibility, and dignity.

Book Lays a Helpful Foundation

Steve Farra's book guides the reader through a concept many might find at first surprising. All of us have presuppositions, and those presuppositions impact our lives and our methods profoundly.

Farra wrote the first draft of his book forty years ago, and has updated it over the years. He writes in an interesting style, and his assertions are well documented. Using primary sources, the author demonstrates how the differing presuppositions Freud and Frankl had led them to view life in profoundly different ways. A secondary theme of the book, then, is the way it subtly challenges readers to consider the impact of their own presuppositions on the conclusions they draw about life and its ultimate purpose.

Readers who want a concise history of Sigmund Freud will find the book helpful, but the book is more than that. Farra's work, through its discussion of Victor Frankl's life, also demonstrates how a life that faces incredible trials (as Frankl did) can rise above its circumstances if that life is built on a solid foundation of truth.

Farra weaves together the stories of their backgrounds, shaping influences, and their practices to demonstrate the impact of these factors on their contributions to the field. Of particular interest is how the rejection of religious faith by Freud and the embracing of religious faith by Frankl, led otherwise similar men to different priorities of treatment. This e-book would be of interest to anyone wanting to know how Freudian influences permeate modern culture, those desirous of a quick education on the world's two most significant psychotherapists, and those who would like to see that there is a positive, equally well-regarded, alternative to Freud. As a chaplain with combat experience I found the material on Frankl of particular interest and helpful.

An excellent overview

This short work is a good general overview of the philosophical underpinnings of the psychotherapeutic views of two of the major leaders of the Viennese School of Psychology. The views of Freud and Frankl are at variance with each other but by comparing and contrasting these two distinct worldviews, an open minded reader can learn a great deal of the practical application of these methodologies within their own unique practice.

Glenn Barr is one of Detroit's most celebrated and successful underground artists. His paintings have appeared in galleries from Seattle and San Francisco to New York City. Glenn's work has been featured in a variety of comics and graphic novels such as Mad, DC Comics and Paradox Press as well as in a series of self published books called Heep. Barr's contribution to animation include background styling for The Ren and Stimpy Show, Bjork's I Miss You video and The New Woody Woodpecker Show. Recognition for his paintings came with solo exhibitions in the late 1990s Since then, he has exhibited internationally and published compilations of his work in "Lowlife Paradise" (2003), "Haunted Paradise" (2006) and his new volume, "Faces."
