This startling book is based on a series of conversations between the Cuban leader and a Brazilian priest. The talk is informal and far-ranging, and Betto's questions are often provocative ("Does Cuba export revolution?"). Castro expounds on such matters as his Jesuit education, the effect of the revolution on the Church, the discrimination against Christians in Cuba and the teachings of Christ. Castro is inspired at one point to claim that there are "ten thousand more coincidences between Christianity and communism than between Christianity and capitalism," and concludes that Christians and Marxists can work together. As theologian Cox remarks in the introduction, Castro seems to savor the subject of religion far more than might be expected from a self-described atheist. Cox also suggests the possibility that the book may be "a clever gambit by a wily and resourceful politician who knows that he needs to have Christians on his side." In any case, it is a dazzling performance.

This work contains a series of fascinating interviews between a Dominican priest and Fidel Castro focused essentially on Castro's attitudes towards religion and Christianity. As the introduction suggests, the Spanish version of this book caused a sensation in Latin America because an avowed socialist leader has declared that a revolutionary can be a Christian at a time when the issue has been raised explicitly in Nicaragua. The interviews include many insights about Castro's upbringing and philosophy, but Betto fails to press Castro on his regime's human rights abuses in relation to his declarations on religion. Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far

The books are very interesting. Castro's recollections are interestingly selective and of course entirely favorable to him.
I have not finished Tex Sample's critique of Niebuhr's concepts of Human nature, power and society, so cannot say much except that I expect the critique to be thorough since I am somewhat familiar with Tex Sample's work.
Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far. But then, that's the way I have found all of Berry's writings. He is provocatively insightful and thought provoking, providing questions and perspectives which we all need to consider very seriously.

Hear Castro talk..and talk..and talk

The translation of a famous discussion between Fidel Castro and one of the major spokesmen of Liberation Theology. The priest seems to worship Fidel more than G-d and offers very little discussion, simply pandering to Castro, agreeing with his every word, and giving him a platform to talk about a wide range of topics. Reads more like 'Fidel's Philosophy'. Fidel isn't exactly the great orator he is supposed to be, judging from reading his speeches, but he does make some nice points that apply to education and religion worldwide. Somewhat recommended. Better than your average fare from Cuba.

A great read, real autobiography, the priest outwitted

As a Leninist, Fidel Castro doesn't believe religion helps, but he also knows that talking with people about religion is a waste of time. What Fidel does here as the bumbling priest wants to explore the glorious of "liberation theology" is Fidel uses it to talk about everything else. Fidel talks a lot about his own experience going to Catholic Schools in Cuba, about education, even about how good playing high school basketball was for his life. Besides being one of the few places where Fidel talks about his own biography, there is a certain joy to this book as Fidel outwits the priest and talks about life, philosophy, education, sports, colonialism, and much more.

A classic of Canadian fiction, highly recommended

This is not the first time I've read Canadian writer Margaret Laurence's fine novel, A JEST OF GOD. But it's probably been at least twenty years since I last read it and it has lost nothing in the interim. Laurence's probing of the single life and the kind of "quiet desperation" Thoreau once wrote about will make you stop and reconsider those people you know who live alone, or with aging parents. School teacher Rachel Cameron is a character you don't forget, and may want to revisit from time to time, as I have. Because her secret, inner life - as demonstrated in her interior monologues and fantasies - are as important, if not more so, than her actual life, which seems pretty bleak. Thirty-four, Rachel lives with her hypochondriac whiny mother upstairs over the funeral parlor once operated by her late father, teaches second grade in a school presided over by a principal who is a secret sadist, and has a brief loveless affair one summer with a former resident of the town who is there to see his parents. The story is told in the first person and the reader is privy to Rachel's most private and intimate thoughts, and THIS is what makes this ordinary tale of loneliness and desperation so very EXTRAordinary.

As I was reading Laurence's book, a minor Canadian classic, I was rememinded of another more recent novel, also by a Canadian, Elizabeth Hay's Alone in the Classroom, which I enjoyed equally. And I wondered if Hay would count Laurence as an important influence in her own development as a writer. I must try to remember to ask her.

I should probably confess that I might never have read A JEST OF GOD had I not seen the scrupulously faithful film adaptation, Rachel, Rachel starring Joanne Woodward and directed by Paul Newman. It was - and still is - a small and perfect gem of film-making. I highly recommend both the book and the film adaptation.

Unforgettable and True

A Jest of God epitomises Margaret Laurence's focus on characters whose stories are usually never told. The protagonist, Rachel, is a spinster school-teacher in small town Manitoba. She is stifled both by her closed community and by internalising their pettiness.
Rachel's inner-dialogue sets the claustophobic atmosphere, while also being funny, frustrating and moving. Laurence's portrait of an ordinairy woman coming to terms with herself and with surroundings is flawless and highly readable.

A Tale of Loneliness and Desire

Thirty-four-old school teacher Rachel Cameron is living a quiet life with her mother in the small Manitoba town of Manawaka. It's not a town where much happens and when it does, everyone knows. The return of an old school friend, Nick Kazlik, adds some spark to Rachel's life, but these are the early 60's, a time where proper women do not follow through on their deepest wishes and needs without repercussions. Rachel embarks on an affair with Nick, her heart and body telling her that this is right and wonderful, while her thoughts are filled with fear about getting caught, or worse, pregnancy.

Rachel's conflicted emotions and desires drive the plot and tension as she copes with her passive-aggressive mother, and the school principal she barely tolerates. Doing the right thing in Rachel's world means living an incredibly lonely life, which lead to moments of desperation. Should she continue to fulfill the expectations placed on her, or is there a way to break free?

A Jest of God is a beautifully written book by Canadian literary icon, Margaret Laurence. It's been over twenty years since I read a Laurence novel, and her writing flows with the same seamless elegance I remember. I wasn't surprised to learn that this book won the Governor General's Award in 1966. Laurence's work will continue to withstand the test of time.

A Wonderful Love Story that Defines True Marriage......

Before reading this book I used to wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then. But after reading this book, Love after Marriage, this quote comes to my mind “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” The author does a beautiful job of drawing the characters and showing all the ins and outs of a complicated but very different story line. If you're looking for a fascinating love story after marriage, this is it! It's beautifully written and grabs you from the beginning with the promise of taking you through a memorable journey. I've given this book as a gift to many friends who are in the process of discovering the true love with their married partners, a major focus in this novel. When you finish this book it would be a good question to ask yourself if you would have wanted to be any of these characters. For me this was a very pleasurable read. The people are fascinating, and the language is lovely. Bhagya is a fine writer, clear and easy reading. What a delightful and insightful book on many levels...., I am sure married people will have enough to take away from this book to enrich, enhance and strength their love lives and rightly understand and respect their partners!

A deeply emotional read

The author takes us into a deep journey of arranged marriages. All characters reveal their softer side and their illogical side. The main protagonist reveals the time tested truism of Indian arranged marriages....that you marry a family. The book has a very conversational style which suits me and the author does a great job setting up scenes that a reader (particularly those not familiar with Indian family setups) may find rather intriguing yet delightful. The book could have been a bit more nuanced in its treatment of characters.

In essence, the books reveals that there is no perfect companion. What is perfect today will change and the only way to lead a happy life is to adjust, compromise and on a an occasion be stern. I recommend this book to all. For Indians, it may bring out some raw emotions of their own and for a non Indian reader, the book gives a great insight into what works in Indian marriages and that love after marriage is indeed enduring albeit with a lot of speed bumps and trenches. Indeed such is life.

Congratulations to Bhagya on her first book and hope to read more books by her.

It's a First Book

I thought this book would be really interesting and enjoyable since it was about India. However, it really wasn't, because it was too bogged down with expository writing. Everything was told to us, everything. She was angry, but we don't see her anger, we don't feel her anger, we don't hear her anger, we are told that she is angry. The book tends to read like a list. She said this is a certain way. He turned his head and said something. They ate food. They talked some more. They went home. The sentences tend to be very short, very simple, and very void of feeling. It felt clunky and didn't flow, I never connected to anyone and never felt what the characters were feeling. I felt like I was reading a really long outline or a list of events, not a story.

Additionally, there were some errors, such as using bete and beti interchangeably. There were repetitive words in the same sentence: he was handsome and good looking. She was pretty and beautiful. Then there were repetitive sentences, he was angry in this sentence and the next sentence tells us that he was furious. Then there were poorly written descriptions, the wedding talks about him putting the sindoor on her forehead at her hairline, but it says it in a way that left me baffled until I called to mind the Bollywood movies I had seen. Further, the book will use Indian terms that are undefined, use Indian terms and give an English translation or definition in parenthesis, and use English terms and put an Indian translation in parenthesis. This format made it confusing. I also found myself calling upon my large store of Bollywood movies and the bits and pieces of language I'd picked up from them to understand what was being said and done in the book.

I think it was a good plot idea and full of interesting details, but I couldn't finish the book. It was too choppy, too confusing, too much like a list, not enough like a good story for me to enjoy.

Garner explores the context of these understandings: the dominance of neoliberal market rationales, in which the State deprioritises anti-discrimination work. He concludes that these frames only make sense in a social world where Britain’s imperial past has no bearing on the present, and where ‘racism’ in popular and media culture becomes purely a story of individual deviancy. This book generates numerous international points of comparison that deepen our understanding of the backlash against multiculturalism in the West.
