Wisdom for Preaching

Welcome to the Wittgenstein of homiletics: H. Grady Davis. Many books on preaching provide only rules for fitting together the various pieces of preaching. Instead of this, Davis shows us the picture on the front of the puzzle box so that we can see what real preaching is. Davis is not concerned with specific rules for preaching, but rather with developing the preachers sense of form. His central idea is that substance and form are inseperable. An idea, he writes, is like a tree with branches reaching up towards the light. Davis walks the reader through finding ideas (trunks) to discovering how they develop (branches). I would recommend this book to anyone who feels the burden to preach the Word.

A Must Read for all Preachers

Even though this book was written in 1958, it is one of the best books on preaching ever written. It is both a systematic and philosophical approach to the design of biblical expository preaching. H. Grady Davis does a masterful job of exposing the faults of modern preaching while at the same time expounding on the necessity of solid expository design and formation of biblical sermons. I have not read any book since that has improved on Davis' work. His approach is for the evangelical preacher who wants to communicate God's Word as God's Word. This book is invaulable for the seminary student as well as the experienced preacher. Reading and applying this book to your own personal study habits will benefit the reader greatly. Read this book, you will not be disappointed.

What a twist!

Marvelous marvelous story with a plot twist I never expected. When I discovered the crux of the heroine's angst, it really shook me. I tried to imagine how I'd feel if I'd found myself in the same situation. It does happen to people. Read this story to see how it all pans out. Great reading!

But what Tracey hasn't counted on is that Julien has more than just memories on his side. A set of adorable triplets who need their mom to come home. It seems Tracey has only one motive for leaving and three compelling reasons why she should stay...

And my review:

I bought this book only because it had Rebecca Winter's name on it. I've found her romances to be sweet and heart-warming, as well as family oriented.

One thing I didn't like was Tracey's inital lame excuses as to why she wanted out of the marriage. The "I just don't want to be married anymore" excuse doesn't fly with me, so I had a hard time liking the heroine at first. Later, after her real reason becomes clear (I won't give it away, but it's a compelling one), a big 'ick' factor kicked in. The reason they couldn't be together was one that grossed me out.

Later, of course, it turned out to be a big misunderstanding, but that revelation came so late that I could really enjoy the romance between Julien and Tracey, as the 'ick' part of it had left too much 'gross-out' residue, so to speak.

I will probably try more of this author's work in the future, but this book was not one of her best.

Super fun book!

I loved this book! I have been a huge fan of Sandy Silverthorne's books for kids, first with my own kids and now my grandkids. I saw that he had a new book so I bought it for my grandson. When I looked through it I realized that I wanted to read it, so instead of giving it to my grandson I will let him borrow it someday! It's not a kid's book, although they would find it interesting too. It is full of so much information, some great time saving ideas and some just plain fun trivia. One of those books that you can just pick up when you have a few minutes and get a kick out of it. (Plus it has his cute illustrations!)

Paul Clayton Gibbs has a mission and a vision to make missionaries who make missionaries all over the world...and he is doing it through the Pais Movement which he founded in 1992. This global ministry is currently impacting six continents, not just sharing the gospel, but equipping, training, and mentoring people to advance the Kingdom of God. Serving as Global Director of Pais, Paul is a gifted speaker, teacher, and author who spends much of his time producing resources to train and mentor Christian leaders. He also travels throughout the world, speaking and teaching. Originally from Manchester, England, Paul and his wife Lynn have two grown sons Joel and Levi. The couple now resides in Arlington, Texas.

Deep and Impactful!

"The Line and the Dot" will inspire you, challenge you, and really open your eyes to a greater depth of understanding of Jesus' heart. As I go through each day, God has used what I have read in this book to show me more of what He sees, more of who He is, and more of who He created me to be.

This book can help you to find the seeds that have been planted, watered, and that God is wanting to grow in you! Your purpose in life will become more clear! Through this book, I have gained so much insight into how to live the abundant life that God desires for all of us to have! To leave this world a better place than when I entered it.

I love seeing the world in a new way!

Useful and practical

In the process of beginning anything new, fresh, or different, I think everyone goes through stages of the process. The problem is, no one knows what the stages are, until now. Paul does an excellent job of breaking down the stages of pioneering, using simple terms and analogies that are practical in nature and Biblical in scope. The best part about the book is that it is not just information, but it actually helps the pioneer in whatever stage he/she is in. I was in stage two going on three when I read this book, and my only wish was that I could have read it before I ever got started. Many of my frustations in pioneering a new idea would have been put to rest having know ahead of time they were coming. Plus I would have been better equipped to deal with them in a manner which helped me instead of frustrated me.
Many of us have ideas we want to see come to pass, but most don't ever get started out of fear of failure, or some other reason. If you have a new idea, any idea, this book will not only help alleviate some of your hesistation, but will also arm you with practical knowledge for your future, and encourage you as well.

"To be forewarned is to be forearmed".

Gibbs' challenging thoughts on vision and leadership make me uncomfortable.

It is not always easy to see where I am sitting within the four stages of pioneering, or even to see my personal vision for my efforts in the Kingdom in High Definition...but this story and challenge offers me a lens. It has given perspective to the early years of my journey, and in some places has unpacked the vague feelings and thoughts that were floating around in my head and my heart almost anonymously.

It has given my past some descriptive words.

And even more spooky is how the book predicts the shape of my future. The necessary path ways to reaching your most potent potential as a pioneer.
Should I choose not to settle, not to allow others to persuade me away from an unpopular yet spectacular end, I should expect that I will likely face more criticism than encouragement, more demands than investment and more skeptics than fans.

And strange as it seems, it has made me excited.

Because the future is yet to be realized. And my dream...my theme, may be more on target than I realized.
