Alice Oswald has been awarded the Eric Gregory Award, an Arts Foundation Award for Poetry, the Forward Prize, the Ted Hughes Award, and the T.S. Eliot Prize. She lives in Devon, England.

Eavan Boland is the author of more than a dozen volumes of poetry and nonfiction. A professor and the director of the creative writing program at Stanford University, she is the winner of a Lannan Foundation Award. She lives in Stanford, California, and Dublin, Ireland.

Experience the Iliad again for the first time

I have read many transltions of the Iliad and taught selections from it at the university level, but this is something different. With the narrative stripped away and the deaths and similes foregrounded, the poem is much shorter and even starker than the original. Oswald explains the differences in how she treats the two aspects of her version, and there's a concluding essay by Eavan Boland that highlights the technique Oswald uses of repeating the simile sections. I will read this intense and moving version many more times than once.

Brilliant idea done brilliantly

Alice Oswald has written a fabulous "version" of the Iliad as interesting as Christopher Logue's reworkings. This long poem is a series of death scenes, some just one line long, followed by an apt simile, so that every human war death is illustrated by some natural occurence, often involving predatory birds or the ocean. Oswald's frame, an opening listing of names emulating war memorials and a closing series of twelve similes, is inspired. My review at poetsandwar.com goes into more detail, but anyone who enjoys Homer should find this distillation a remarkably moving work. Brilliant imagery.

I don't mean that she is the greatest poet writing

Alice Oswald may be the most exciting poet to appear since the days of Pound and Eliot. I know that's a large claim, but I've been an avid reader of poetry for over 50 years and haven't heard a new voice of this force in all that time. I don't mean that she is the greatest poet writing, as there are great poets who use less rhetorical lines, writers such as W.S. Merwin, Gary Snider, Wendell Berry and Robert Bly. But Oswald has recaptured and re-invented the kind of large, world-shaking and world-shaping poetry that Pound and Eliot brought forth. It's amazing that her work, winning laurels in England, is so little known in the U.S. and I urge lovers of poetry to do something about that. Read her, and spread the word.

About the Author
Author Eric A. Kimmel is well-known for the tales he has retold from around the world. Some of his best-known titles are Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins (a Caldecott Honor Book), Gershon’s Monster, Anansi and the Talking Melon, and The Runaway Tortilla. A former professor of children’s literature, he lives in Portland, Oregon.

Phil Huling has also illustrated Puss in Cowboy Boots, by his wife, Jan. The Hulings live in Hoboken, New Jersey.

This is the charming retold tale of "Stone Soup" with a Southwestern flare ...

The soldiers were coming, the soldiers were coming! Si, si ... oh, no. The mayor of San Miguel was simply not happy with the situation and exclaimed, "Comen como lobos. ¡Cuando pasen por aquí, no va a quedar ni una tortilla!" Something had to be done and the townspeople knew just what to do because they had done it before. They ran this way and that and that way and this hiding their food. The pigs went up to the rooftops and the "canastos con tortillas y tamales al fondo del viejo aljibe de piedra." Even the children climbed trees to hide their chile peppers.

They changed into rags and slapped some mud on their faces and they were done. Si, si, they were ready for those soldiers when they arrived. Señor Capitán and his compañeros were weary and needed something to eat. "¿Pueden darnos algunos frijoles y tortillas?" he asked the mayor. Oh, no, there was nothing to eat, "ni siquierea hay suficiente papra los pequeños," explained the mayor. Señor Capitán was not one to be discouraged and said to his amigos, "Parece que vamos a tener que hacer sopa de cactus." The only thing they would need would be a BIG thorn, or was it?

This is the charming retold tale of "Stone Soup" with a Southwestern flare. The inimitable Eric Kimmel has a knack for making a tale come alive and this is one of my favorites. Of course young children will laugh when the whole town starts to come alive when the cactus soup just needs one more thing to make it taste better. The artwork itself brings out the flavor of the tale, especially when that not-so-little mayor is making a pronouncement. In the back of the book is a brief author's note about the setting of the tale. This would be a fun book to read during circle or story time!

Stefan's Review: "They look like me!"

My four-year-old really loves "Sopa De Cactus." This is definitely a "read to me" book: while there are gorgeous illustrated pictures, this is not a picture book with simple one-line text, and the book we received has text that was written completely in Spanish. My children are bilingual, and their father's first language is Spanish, so he was the one who read the story to them. My son kept pointing to the illustrations and saying "Papi, como yo! They look like me." We're by now accustomed to the reality that Latinos portrayed in the media usually have little or no resemblance to real Mexican people, so it was nice that my child found someone who "looked like him." He wants to take the book to school with him for story time, when the teacher or a visiting parent reads to the children.

One of Asia's most popular film stars, Chan has helped reinvent the Hong Kong action genre by blending hyperkinetic stunts with a self-deprecating humor and a freewheeling flamboyance reminiscent of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. His autobiography, unfortunately, contains few of these elements. In minute detail, he chronicles his punishing childhood in the Chinese Opera Research Institute and his rise to superstardom. From age seven to 17, under the severe discipline?some might even call it child abuse?of his Opera Master, Chan was trained for theater and film work. After the death of Bruce Lee (Chan was a stuntman in Lee's Fists of Fury and Enter the Dragon), his studio, Golden Harvest, attempted to turn him into a Lee clone. But Chan's film persona finally gelled when he began to emulate his silent-movie heroes and to punctuate his films with what he calls "the superstunt"?high-risk feats of derring-do that he performs himself. Chan takes himself to task for neglecting his family (indeed, his wife and 14-year-old son are only briefly mentioned), and offers a candid look at the gangs, called Triads, that retain a powerful grip on the Hong Kong film industry. The star of films like Drunken Master (1978), Police Story (1985), and Supercop (1992) recounts his life in short, machine-gun-burst chapters. Beginning with his formative days as the acolyte of an opera master at the Chinese Drama Academy, Chan dives into his Hong Kong stuntman apprenticeship and career as a worldwide kung fu, shoot-'em-up idol. The staccato narrative ends with his U.S. breakthrough, Rumble in the Bronx (1994). Chan afterward divulges his "top ten stunts," "top ten fights," and his accrued bodily "aches and pains" in separate appendixes. A section called "Jackie's Films" affords a whirlwind survey of Chan's oeuvre. I read the disclaimer: Writing, markings, etc... may be found on the book..

I knew I was buying a used book. I took the chance, since "I Am Jackie Chan" has been a hard book to find. Also, I've read the book already, so to me, it was worth the risk.

I received it today, and it has a few bends on the soft cover, but other than that, the book is perfect.
I noticed that the book is actually sold for six US dollars, More than double what I paid for it, but alas, I have my book and I can sleep at night.

I'm one happy customer. Maybe I got lucky, who knows. No book is the same when it's used. So this review may not be the same for other customers.

As for the book itself, it's an awesome book. You might want to rent it out at your public library if it's not available on Amazon.

I can't say much about the book without talking too much. All I can say is that it's an amazing story. Jackie Chan tells how he got his name, Jackie Chan! I always thought it was a super awesome story, and I enjoy telling others about it. When I tell them, they think it's funny and I can't help but smile. I read "I Am Jackie Chan" 14 years ago, for the first time, and I still remember a lot of the book. Why did I buy it, if I still remember the book? I'm starting a library of my own, and this book was a "Must Have" for me. That's how awesome this book is. :D

When selecting this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was certainly surprised when I began reading. Based off of his fun-loving charisma today, you would have never expected that he was raised in an extremely strict setting. Of course that never stopped him from acting out and putting people in their place, but punishment was cruel during his time and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and his Chinese Drama Academy family. Reading about his struggle on finding a promising job after his life at the Academy really helped me put into perspective as to how hard he's worked to become what he is today. I was a bit surprised when he shared his struggle with acting, since that's what he's known for, but I suppose with each film, an actor's skills only get better. Overall, this autobiography is very intriguing as it is consumed of many things I've never read of before.

After reading this book on Jackie Chan I am truly amazed that he survived his early childhood, but it has made me appreciate all the efforts he uses to make sure his movies are funny and action packed. I know that I could not have gone thru what he did in the Chinese Opera Schools. This book had a lot of pictures of him as a young boy and of his parents. Well worth reading to know about one of your favorite actors.

This short book will hopefully increase your desire to dig deeper into the scriptures.

This is a very thought provoking book. The author relies exclusively upon scripture in an attempt to wrap our minds around the age of the earth and how we understand time in general, as well as time in the creation week. He also desires to instill in readers the willingness to accept those who may not share completely your particular perspective. In the end Pastor Delzell really wants us all to dig into God's word ourselves and let His Spirit help our finite minds get a new glimpse of God's infinite nature. God exists in timelessness, whereas we are bound by time in our present state. In this life we are unable to understand all things, but scripture is the place to learn all we can.

I thought this was a good balanced approach to Bible/science age of the earth issues which put an emphasis on being humble toward other believers and their convictions on how to view the Genesis creation account and humble toward God's Word letting it speak for itself and remaining open to the obvious truth that God can do anything and that we can't always wrap our minds around what He has done. I've read a lot on these issues but this book still gave me new things to think about. Definitely worth the money and worth taking the time to read.
