At last, volume one of the long-awaited update to Moore's 1959 epic.  It is difficult to understand the monumental amount of work in one of these volumes of the Treatise without reading through it.  Take the chapter on ontogeny, for example.   How do we know how a trilobite developed?  After all, we can hardly watch one.   Only by collecting hundreds of fossils - at first, no doubt, misidentified as different species - and comparing them, across collection, institution, and probably national boundaries: work which may take multiple workers decades. The 530 pages of this volume represents whole lifetimes of dedicated research.
The Treatise is a technical reference for professional palaeontologists so you will want to be a very enthusiastic amateur before you consider buying it. If you are, though, then this is definitely the definitive word on trilobite morphology, habit, ontogeny, evolution and classification available today. It is not a complete systematic review of the whole class, however: This is the first volume of a work which is expected to stretch to three. Systematic descriptions are given for the Agnostida and Redlichiida only.
Readers familiar with the 1959 version will first notice that the familiar line drawings have been almost totally replaced by excellent (at least 600 dpi) photographs of actual fossils. As before, taxonomic descriptions are provided down to generic level, providing authorship, synonymy, diagnostic morphology, type species and provenance.

Heartwarming lecture

Let me start by saying that I'm not in the medical field, but I enjoyed this reading very much. This book is a sincere narration of the experiences that the author lived during his long career. Rather taking credit for all of his success (which is quite impresive), Dr Pena describes in a very humbling way his gratitude for the people that has helped him during the years, and his admiration for the parents of his patients who will go above and beyond anything for their children. Using a series of short stories, Dr Pena shows a very human side of the medical field.

When I closed the book at the end, there was a tear on the corner of my eye and a smile on my face.

modern medicine... the old fashioned way

I phoned Dr. Pena's office a few weeks ago to ask a question about my daughter. (I had quadruplets in1991) Not about the daughter he had operated on two decades ago, but her sister. Dr. Pena himself answered the phone and immediately recognized our family. We spoke for 20 minutes; catching up first then discussing the reason for my call. It is the type of man he is. The book is his voice; passionate and frank. I'm thrilled I heard his voice in my head as I read it. Dr. Pena was one of the first surgeons we worked with and set the standard for how I determined how to select all doctors afterwards. You may think it's written simply, but you will find it touches every level of your life.

An excellent book from a quality human being!

I bought this book after Dr. Pena helped a family member. I traveled from Pennsylvania to his clinic to benefit from his expertise! His care changed our family's life. A true angel and scholar! When I became aware that he wrote a book I wanted to read it! As an advanced practice nurse and a mother, I continue to be impressed with this man's grace. Beautiful book....inspirational and lovely! If you are interested in how a true physician thinks and moves buy this book, read it, and be moved! A true gem of a doctor!

About the Author

Otared Haidar, PhD, Mst, PGDip, DPhil, (Oxon), specializes in Arabic and comparative literature and has taught Arabic language and literature at many institutions. She is a full faculty member in the Islamic World and the Middle East at the Faculty of the Oriental Studies, University of Oxford, where she teaches Arabic and Arabic Media.

Excellent book

While I agree, it could explain some things in more detail, to make them clearer, it is a great book for beginners. The other reviewer said it had no markings, no audio which doesn't make sense to me. First of all, its not a course book, its a grammar book. Most grammar books do not come with audio; none of the McGraw-Hill grammar books for other languages come with audio. They already assume that if you are reading the material and writing the lessons in the book, you already know what the words are, what they mean and how they sound/pronounced. Same for markings; they teach you in most courses from the early beginning stages, here and also in the Middle East, not to rely on markings to learn words. They introduce you to a word once or twice and then you never see the markings again. They do away with them early in language learning so you don't use them as a crutch, because newspapers, books and magazines in Arabic, mostly do not have markings for you to sound out every word, its assumed you already know. I think he was looking for a course book and this isn't one. If you don't know how to read Arabic already, understand some vocabulary and can't figure out how to pronounce Arabic words without markings, then maybe you should wait until you get a little further before you buy this book. If you can't read in Arabic script simple sentences like, "My name is...", "I want this book", or other really simple sentences, you may struggle but I would suggest getting it anyway! If you do, it is a good book for not only picking up grammar but in helping you structure simple sentences and learn some new vocabulary. It also helps you retain words and practice Arabic, by making you write lessons down in the book in ARABIC not English; I love that about this book! That helps you to also, practice your handwriting and thinking in your head on how to structure sentences, in Arabic and get away from English. Pronouns and prepositions is one of the things in Arabic that can give most beginners, frustration and headaches and this book is good at showing you how to use them with example sentences and having you write down sentences so that you can reinforce that in your memory. Great beginner book, and by that I mean, mid-beginner not brand new beginner; it really is worth buying. If you are intermediate or advanced, it will probably be too basic for you but would be great to have as a reference book!

I purchased this book as part of the commonly bought together three pack of Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Vocabulary, Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions and Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Verb Tenses.

As someone who was attempting to learn the language on his own, I found these books to be helpful with providing me with the basics of the language, not to mention providing extra words, phrases and other helpful terms. Plus, getting three 190+ page books for ~$30, it was also a great bargain.

This is an excellent book for understanding and practicing Arabic grammar/ sentence structure. It gives thorough explanations and so much practice. Each small activity builds upon the next. This book takes the mystery out of Arabic sentence structure!
