A journey into the depths of despair

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is an excellent novel, portraying the down ward spiral that almost anyone could take. In The Bell Jar, Plath allows the reader to see first hand what it is like, to be truelly depressed. Unsure of your future, and not sure if you want to continue your life. Using Esther Greenwood, Plath tells her own story of suicide attempts, and thus is able to add real insite. The story brings you on Esther's downward spiral into the depths of despair and allows you to follow her on her path to recovery. I found the book extremely interesting, it really digs deep within the human physci.

About the Author

Dr. Ephraim Nissan has a long record of research in artificial intelligence (AI), including on AI & Law. He has held research positions at various universities, and since 1994 he is based in London. He has over 320 publications, of which 115 are articles in journals. He also holds an honorary fellowship in the humanities at the University of Manchester. In the late 1980s, his ALIBI model was a seminal project in the area of this book. From 1996, by means of editorial projects, he has had a central role in bootstrapping into existence, as a unified field, the AI modelling of reasoning on legal evidence, and in moving this field into the mainstream of AI & Law scholarship. This effort’s culmination is this book. He has established three scholarly journals, and been a guest-editor about twenty times, of which the topic of six was within AI & Law.

Donald Kalsched is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Trauma and the Soul

We are so fortunate to have someone willing to write about the deepest aspects of the psyche and to what depths it will go to attempt to heal itself. Donald Kalsched truly understands these deep spiritual pockets of the unconscious and to what lengths the unconscious will struggle to avoid the grips of terrified "otherness". I am happy to know that Kalsched now believes that the Protector/Persecutor is now educable and that trauma is not always committed to the grips of anti-relatedness. Kalsched goes to great lengths to explain to the reader in theory, fairytale, and psychoanalytic work how the psychic wounds that occur very early in life can actually heal themselves through the "integrative energies" of the of unconscious. This book combines both Jungian depth psychotherapy and the sacred spiritualness of the traumatized soul. This book embraces Dante's guided descent into the inferno, the role of the clinician as guide and container, Jungian theory and the integration of the dismembered soul that is able to reach wholeness on the other side.

The Inner World of Trauma is one of my favorite books, for it captures the nuances and depths of the psyche's attempt to find a place to belong in the context of interpersonal trauma. With Trauma and the Soul, Kalsched expands the discussion to include the transformational and spiritual nature of the psychotherapeutic relationship and how healing and integration come about through a shared journey. There are many beautiful passages in this book that will bring tears of recognition for those who know trauma deeply and who have entered a portal to the sacred as a consequence.

One side features a clear photo and the other, nine questions to promote discussion.
Excellent resource to help cognitively impaired loved ones engage in conversation; especially, during those quiet moments when there's nothing to say.
As a Toastmaster, I also used these cards for Table Topics. (See photo.)
