Scott Mainwaring and Aníbal Pérez-Liñán argue for a theoretical approach situated between long-term structural and cultural explanations and short-term explanations that look at the decisions of specific leaders. They focus on the political preferences of powerful actors - the degree to which they embrace democracy as an intrinsically desirable end and their policy radicalism - to explain regime outcomes. They also demonstrate that transnational forces and influences are crucial to understand regional waves of democratization. About the Author
Scott Mainwaring is the Eugene and Helen Conley Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include democratic institutions, democratization, and political parties and party systems. Among his previous books are Rethinking Party Systems in the Third Wave of Democratization: The Case of Brazil (1999), The Third Wave of Democratization in Latin America: Advances and Setbacks (co-edited, Cambridge University Press, 2005), The Crisis of Democratic Representation in the Andes (co-edited, 2006) and Democratic Governance in Latin America (co-edited, 2010). Mainwaring is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2007, he was listed as one of the 400 most cited political scientists teaching in the United States.

Anibal Perez-Linan is an Associate Professor of Political Science and a member of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on democratization, political institutions, and the rule of law in new democracies. He is the author of Presidential Impeachment and the New Political Instability in Latin America (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and has published articles in the Journal of Politics, World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Politics, and Electoral Studies, among other journals. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Wein lays it out to his patients, about eighty percent of whom, he estimates, have well-controlled blood sugar levels. About the Author
Daryl Wein is a family practice Physician Assistant who both treats diabetics and has type 2 diabetes, himself. He graduated from U.C. Davis School of Medicine in 1999 after working for twenty years as a clinical laboratory scientist. Wein's own experience having type 2 diabetes helped motivate him to write a guidebook meant to help people manage the disease. He learned from a mentor that, while it can cause serious health problems, there are simple steps people can take to control the disease. Wein is also a licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor.

A very helpful book for a Type 2 Diabetic or a health conscious person.

This is an excellent book to read if you have Type 2 Diabetes. This us a no fluff book that has useful information, it has excellent help in maintenance, diet and more.

Personally, I do not have Diabetes, yet I found this book very meaningful because of the food information in it. I like that Mr Wein lists the BAD FOOD and the GOOD foods (low carb foods).

Most of this book, I found a short read, yet I believe it has great information.

I really liked the Questions and Answers. These answers/info were fantastic!

Also, I liked the Appendix A...this is a food list with total carbs, this is sorted by HIGHEST CARB to Lowest carb.

In my opinion, this book is helpful for one who has Type 2 Diabetes. And it is also a great help for one who is health conscious and watching their weight and carbs.

'The single most important thing to do is to avoid eating carbohydrates’

California author Daryl Wein has written the new hallmark for understanding and treating Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, and while it is directed to those who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes it is one of the most user friendly manuals for understand and thus preventing the development of this once dreaded ailment. Daryl’s credentials are impressive - he earned a degree as a medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist from USC Medical Center in 1978 and earned a degree as a Family Practice Physician Assistant from UC Davis School of Medicine in 1999 and has worked as a PA throughout California, including Urgent Care, Hospital ERs, California Correctional Health Care System, and for rural health clinics, all the while teaching and developing software, and performing as a musician!

As Daryl states in his supportive Introduction, he was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic, but investigating the permutations of that dreaded diagnosis he came to the conclusion, ‘I have learned a lot. I have learned that I am really NOT “diabetic.” I have learned that the vast majority of diabetics have what is officially called “type 2 diabetes.’ Which is not diabetes at all but a completely different disease.’ And with that open door Daryl invites the reader into one of the most accessible overviews of what Type 2 Diabetes really is – a problem with carbohydrates (sugars and starches). ‘Simply put, we cannot process carbohydrates correctly, so we eventually develop elevated blood sugar levels, especially after meals. In a nut shell, carbohydrates are quite toxic to us whereas they may be less so for normal people.’

Daryl’s forte as a writer and coach is his willingness to include himself in the discussion about the causes, diagnosis, prevention, management, and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes: his advice and recommendations come from his personal management of his own condition and that fact makes the reader (likely intimidated with the new diagnostic label of Type 2 Diabetes) comfortable with his presentation.

This book belongs on the shelves of everyone concerned about a new diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, and for that matter, on the reading list of everyone concerned about health now and in the future. This Book Saved My Life

First I have to say that this book has helped me tremendously because I am a Type 2 Diabetic and I have a very hard time controlling my blood sugars. This book came at the right time because I have been back and forth with doctors and being in the hospital because of my uncontrolled diabetes. My eyesight is suffering from it and there are days when I can't see at all.

The one thing I learned from this book that is so important is that carbs kill. There is a thing called Carbosis which is having an elevated blood sugar for a longtime. Carbs create high blood sugars that go on to other things. One phrase that kept coming back to me was "Blood - Sugar Blanche". BLANCHE stands for Blood -Legs amputated - Atherosclerotic - Nerve problems - Circulatory Problems - Heart Disease - Existing only because of Dialysis treatment. This had me thinking I need to make sure I stay away from carbs and re-exam what I eat and male sure I take my blood sugar everyday and eat healthy and exercise.

About the Author

Sébastien Chartrand has worked primarily in international criminal law since becoming a member of the Quebec Bar. He has been the legal defense assistant in cases before the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and Ex-Yugoslavia. He also did a legal internship for the Rwandan Tribunal in 2009. John Philpot has more than 25 years of experience as a criminal defense lawyer, including 20 years in international criminal justice. He has represented clients before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, including the Appeal Court in the Hague, and the International Criminal Court. He has been the chief organizer of three international criminal law conferences. They both live in Montreal.

ASP 4.5 Genie teaching in a bottle, take a sip of real knowledge

The world of ASP website design has been a confusing and poorly supported with a hodge-podge of training books until now. This book is very well written and within a few hours of reading it I was able to incorporate solid understanding of ASP development into my thinking. The author knows how to teach this material in a manner that can make you an instant expert in a fraction of the time that you might expect.

I'm throwing away my previous books on ASP design because this book is so much better at teaching me the subject. I hope the author wrote other training methods that match my areas of interest.

NOTE: this is a very tall book that may not fit easily into your bookshelves. It should be placed on top of your book collection as a tribute to the excellent writing contained within.

Probably the best book I've bought on the subject . . .

I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to create ASP.NET (web) applications. I've been doing Windows forms in .NET for about 10 years now but using a language that can be considered a dialect of C# (if interested, ASNA Visual RPG for .NET). While I had a fairly good handle on object oriented programming, there were constructs that I never really understood. Simon's book and teaching method have not only given be a good start on ASP.NET programming but also filled in the blanks in my knowledge of C#. I now have a much better understanding (as a grizzly old IBM programmer) of what constructors do and how to best employ custom classes. What you will see on the back cover of this book ("Why this book is different") is totally accurate. I only wish other books on IT subjects were written in the same style as Simon Smart has used. I f you want to learn C# and ASP.NET, this is an excellent (and possibly the only way) to start.

A very important part of any plan to master ASP.NET!

After Adobe decided to drop database support for Dreamweaver, I went looking for a replacement tool set to build interactive, database driven web sites. I decided it was time to jump into ASP.NET as my new tool and this book has been a huge help with the rather steep learning curve. The book includes a comprehensive review of ASP.NET 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012. I used Visual Studio 2013 Express for the Web which is a free download from Microsoft. All of the examples worked just as expected except for the chapter on site security. Microsoft dropped a very nice tool for managing site security, between VS 2012 and VS 2013 so I wasn't able to complete those examples in the book. There were a few minor differences between what the book told me to use and what I found in VS 2013 but those differences were minor and easy to overcome. I am presently working through the follow-on version of this book which is a set of "expert" skills. So far, that book appears every bit as useful as this one. This wasn't the first book on C# and Visual Studio that I've completed, but it is the first that I was able to work through all the way to the end. I highly recommend this book if you wish to learn about ASP.NET and Visual Studio... I consider it a vital stop on my way to mastering ASP.NET.

This is the type of book all couples should read.

This is THE BOOK you need if you want to learn to resolve conflicts in your marriage. It is meant to be used with the book He Wins, She Wins. I think that most of the problems we face in marriages are due to our poor conflict resolving skills. No one teaches us how to resolve conflicts before we are married, that is probably why a big percentage of marriages fail, but this book makes it easier to learn that process. You are able to take on samples of problems that do not necessarily apply to your own marriage, but doing it the workbook teaches you the process of how to go about it so that you are able to resolve any type of conflict you and your spouse might be encountering.

Terrorism: The Bottom Line

This edition is an excellent review of Terrorim. It provides the history on how terrorism was used in the past and an excellent anology of the current events. I am using the book for undergrad students at the university and highly recommend it.
