A must read, an easy read, for any photographer.

First of all, Patrick Smith is by far my favorite landscape photographer! His images are something you can only dream of, but yet realistic. Opposing descriptions - I know, but his images are literally something you can't explain.

So far I have read everything Patrick has offered on photography, multiple times: his blog, flickr photostream and google+. A few years ago, while reading his blog, he suggested to read this book. I shrugged at the thought of how anyone can better their landscape photography by looking at painted pictures. And of course I was wrong! No matter what disciple anyone wishes to master, they mimic and learn from previous successors. This is exactly what Patrick Smith did and he has shared his knowledge of artists and their fine art in this book.

This book is chronologically organized by artists from around the world. For each image/painting throughout the book, Patrick gives a brief history of the artist, the time frame the artist lived in, and discusses how the particular artist used light and weather as tools to help compose the image. He discusses placement of objects, vanishing points, rule-of-thirds, frames-within-frames, sunsets, sunrises, moonlight, foreground, background etc. Also, and what I think to be the most important, he discusses the small details an artist used that enhances it's appearance. At the conclusion of each image he correlates the discussed into photography and how it may help you and how it helped him.

After reading this book I can definitely see where Patricks photography style comes from. If you read this book you'll know what I'm talking about.

Patrick also mentioned on google+ that he's working on another book. I believe this book is similar to this except he uses his images and describes in detail how he came about the image. Another I'll read for sure!

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to take their photography to the next level.

Outstanding book!

I would highly advise purchasing and reading this book. There are many texts that focus on the gadgets and various technical tricks, this book focuses on the art. Many paintings are carefully analyzed here, and the author shows how the artistic elements in the great masterpieces of painting can be translated into aesthetically worthy landscape photographs.

Nice overview of landscape work

Nicely written overview of landscape painting. Some points seem more relevant to photography than others, but it was enjoyable to read throughout. The reproductions of the paintings were large enough to look quite good on Kindle for iPad. A good read if you're interested in landscape photography, or just in landscape art in general.
